Hummingbird Robotics Project Spotlights

3rd Grade Charlotte's Web Robotics Project & Book Trailer (2023)

This Cross Curricular Project included ELA, Computer Science, and Math

Students engaged in a creative activity centered around the book "Charlotte's Web" by recreating a scene using the Hummingbird Robotics Kit. Initially, they constructed a barn scene on the bottom of a cardboard box. Then, they assembled the characters Wilbur the Pig and Charlotte the spider. By attaching a position servo motor to Wilbur's head, they learned about angles and degrees, and programmed Wilbur's head to move from side to side. The code was then downloaded to the microbit, and they tested and modified it as required. Subsequently, they incorporated a rotation motor into Wilbur's tail, coding it to spin. To simulate Charlotte's movement, the students utilized a position servo motor to raise and lower her from the top of the barn. This involved thoughtful consideration of measurements for connecting Charlotte with fishline, determining angles for coding, and determining appropriate pauses in between movements. Upon completion of the robotics project, the students produced a video showcasing their creation, which was integrated into WeVideo to construct a Book Trailer for "Charlotte's Web."
